New ways of offering advice to teens have been established in the recent times where one way which was not common earlier is the use of wilderness therapy. The method is highly recommendable for teens though it gives some room for youthful adults below the age of 28 years. The main purpose of the therapy is behavior modification in teens and youths who are in dire need for behavioral change. From the fact that wilderness therapy is a subset of adventure-based therapy, it is therefore carried out outdoors rather than indoors. However the method should not be mistaken as a solution to all problems that face teenagers. Unless one is willing to change through first realizing about themselves, this method may prove to be unsuccessful.
The first steps involves placing the learners into groups which is done by experts in the field. The groups should be constituted by a few individuals in order to have manageable groups. Leaders are assigned to each group, and their roles in guiding in the teens are spelt out. The teens are taken through the process of first accepting themselves and open up on matters that they hold in their minds. Some have been drug addicts or computer games addicts who may have resulted in a fractured relationship between the teens and other members of the society.
Any therapy is tasked with creating awareness among victims, and wilderness therapy is not different. Any therapist needs to have enough knowledge on the daily activities carried out by the teens and the challenges facing them. It is useful to carry out the therapy in places away from their normal lives which help to reduce distraction and hence create a good environment for the learners, by avoiding their normal lives. The teens need only to carry the necessities which will include water food and a sleeping bag.
News For This Month: Resources
The wilderness therapy helps those undertaking it to learn that not everything in this world falls under our control though there are things that we can have control. To illustrate this, specific examples are given using physical features and things. They, therefore, realize that they can control some of the aspects of their lives whereas others are out of their control.
It is normal for the teens to encounter challenges during the process of wilderness therapy due to the change in their normal way of living. Others will be out of their control, but they have time to figure out. It, therefore, provides them a good route to self-realization which they can follow. From this they can form groups in which they can view their common problems and find ways of solving them themselves. However it is required of them to figure out how to solve problems on their own. Parents are also required to support the teens during this period.
